Library Information

Library and Knowledge Services

There are three NHSG libraries (Cornhill, Dr. Gray's, and the Foresterhill Medical Library),as well as the NHS Grampian Archives.  The archives are open to all members of staff and the general public.  They contain the historic records of almost 100 Grampian hospitals and health organisations and more information can be found here.

There is also a smaller library at Chalmers Hospital , which is manned by NHSG staff for a few days each month. All services are available at all site libraries and some services can also be accessed electronically.

Services at the ARI site are provided by the University of Aberdeen Medical Library. There is an NHS Clinical Librarian on site who is the lead for NHSG Library and Knowledge Service's training programme and supports staff carrying out literature searches, e.g. to find evidence to support/change clinical practice or service delivery.

Most of the sites operate within office hours Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm although some services may require you to phone before visiting.

Membership

Membership of NHS Grampian libraries is available to:

  • All staff of NHS Grampian
  • Independent practitioners (e.g dentists)
  • NHS Grampian partners (e.g those employed in social care)

  • Staff and students of Aberdeen University and Robert Gordon University
and is sometimes available to others outside these groups at the librarian's discretion. Membership forms are available at any of the site libraries or can be downloaded from the Library Services and Archives tab on the library homepage

Resources

You don't need to be a member of the library to consult material, photocopy or register with the NHS e-library.  Membership is, however, required to borrow material and submit inter-library loan requests.

All NHSG libraries provide the following services:

  • Book and journal loan and consultation
  • Computer access
  • Study areas
  • Assistance with accessing electronic journals and databases
  • Literature searches/compiling search strategies
  • Training on the use of the NHS e-library and other databases

Photocopying, scanning and printing facilities are also available in most site libraries.  Photocopying is subject to NHS Scotland copyright regulations which are displayed within each library.  For more information please contact your local branch.  All of these services are currently free.

Training

Library induction and training on Ovid, Medline and other medical databases, Refworks and the e-Library are offered at all sites and can be arranged for groups or on a one-to-one basis either in the library or at a more convenient location.  A timetable of training days is also run at regular intervals throughout the year.  Contact the library or consult the library training pages on the NHS Grampian intranet for further information.

Shelcat (Scottish Health Libraries Catalogue)

Our on-line catalogue (www.shelcat.org) can be used to search material held within NHS Scotland libraries.  Shelcat can also be used to check user information such as how many books you have on loan and when they are due back.  Patrons can also request and renew items through Shelcat.

Inter Library Loans

If items are held out with NHS Grampian these can be requested through Shelcat for Inter Library loan.  You must be a member of an NHS Grampian library to use this service.  Inter Library Loans are free to NHSG staff for work purposes and each library member is allowed ten active inter library loans at any one time.  Staff expecting to make a large number of requests should contact the library with regards to making a contribution to costs from departmental or research funds.

Electronic Resources

NHS Grampian subscribe to thousands of electronic journals and books through The Knowledge Network. Many databases such as Medline, Ovid and Cinahl, guidelines, patient information, virtual learning, bibliography tools and shared spaces are available so please ask library staff if you need assistance with these resources.
